This is the type of bow which is the oldest one. This was the beginning of the world of bows.
But even in this category there are differences.
Cross section of the limbs: First of all we have a look at the cross section of old English longbows. The cross section of the limbs is like a “D”. In the front straight and in the back rounded so to say. Bows of the nomadic people and of the Native Americans have got a cross section like a quadrate. So straight at the front and at the back of the limbs. There are more types of longbows, but we just want to take a look on the most produced ones.
Form of the bow:
There are four different types of longbows. To show them we have pictures from all of these types. On the pictures the bows are not spanned.
Straight: The bow considers of one long piece which is very straight. The first bows were like this type.
Reflex: The bow has got a small curve to the front. So you need more power to span it, but the bow could give more power to the arrows.
Deflex: The bow has got a curve like a reflex bow, too. The difference is that the curve of a deflex bow goes to the back.
